Versa-Tech, Inc. awarded bid for material supplier for geotechnical fill of the Eads Bridge Eastern Tower

When asked about the decision to use geofoam fill in place of other traditional fills, general contractor St. Louis Bridge Companies Project Manager Adam Hanneke shared the following explanation:

 

“When we were looking into alternative construction methods for our project, we had 3 different options. We looked at light-weight concrete, rock fill and geofoam. We ultimately chose the geofoam because of designers concerns with lateral pressures on the walls of the Eads Bridge East Tower. With the age of the bridge, engineers were concerned that the added pressure from either the rock or the concrete could cause great harm to the integrity of the structure. However, geofoam was chosen for more than just this reason. By using other methods, we would have had to limit our installation to 4 hour periods when the Metrolink tracks were shut down. By utilizing the geofoam, we were able to install it while trains were still operating during normal revenue hours, saving us a great deal of time on our schedule and allowing us to hit major milestones ahead of schedule. We feel that the geofoam option was one that both we as contractors and the owner felt comfortable with after much discussion. We feel that the future of geofoam in the area can be a very good one due to the large amounts of abandoned rail tunnels in the Metropolitan area.”
